Brandesburton Neighbourhood Watch

Neighbourhood Watch is a Crime Prevention initiative:
To cut crime and opportunities for crime
To help and reassure those who live in the area
To encourage neighbourhoodliness and closer communities
To have an active partnership with the local police

We have our notice board next to the Post Office which is kept up to date with any crime news. We put notices in the "Brandesburton Buzz" and "Brands News".

Naturally, the more people that attend the meetings the better it will be for the village. Teenagers and young people are especially welcome because it would be useful to hear their ideas.

For more information on the Brandesburton Neighbourhood Watch scheme please contact Susan Youngson on 01964 543194 or email

Since the last meeting the church has had lead removed from the roof on 3 separate occasions. Last night Gordon Calvert talked to the PCC about extra security to protect the roof. He also suggested painting the drain pipes in    anti thief paint. Tony and Janet added more ideas for the PCC to think about.

At that time the feedback from the public was very positive. Much less noise and trouble. Everyone was very pleased because the police had put extra patrols on in the village to stop this unwanted behaviour.
The fence around the football square is to be removed because the parish council feels that it is a waste of money to keep repairing it. Tony did say that there are grants to fund a youth worker and to pay for new equipment for the play park.

Crime report In May the theft of boat parts from Dacre Lake Caravan Park.

Play park. Youths from Brandesburton and other places meet in the Play Park. Under age drinking does take place in the play park and this leads to other nuisances like damage been done to the wire by older children climbing up into the cage where the like to sit. Geoff Youngson was at a NAT meeting last week and the damage was brought to the attention of the Safer Communities. We are hoping to get some help to pay for the damage. Some residents thought it was a waste of time ringing up to complains but PCW Bates explained that each call is logged because owing to the pressure on the police they cannot always attend the incident.

Youths have been reported to the police for climbing on the chapel roof.

The Parish council also debates the bad behaviour in the Play Park. The over hanging hedge has been cut back in a bid to stop underage drinking in the park.

Brandesburton Neighbourhood Watch was kindly given £80 which it as been decided will be spent on 8 neighbourhood watch signs to be fixed on lamp posts around the village.

During the summer holidays we have asked for Speed Boards to be put up in North Frodingham Road to show traffic that it is a 30mph zone.

Minutes from the Neighbourhood Watch Group held on 13th March 2007 in the Chapel Rooms, Brandesburton

16 people attended the meeting. The guest speaker was Anthony Froggat from Hang Wag in Hull. Apologies were received from Kevin Vickers and David Green.

1.         The minutes from the last meeting were read and signed
2.         Starter packs have been distributed to every house in the village. The cost of distribution has been met out of funds.
3.         The Parish Council has agreed to pay for the cost of the chapel room for future meetings.

Anthony Froggat spoke about the aims of neighbourhood watch and how we can help to improve our neighbourhood.

To reduce crime and fear of crime.

To alert people to cold callers.

A nominated neighbour is one idea where a vulnerable person is given a neighbour's telephone number to ring if they are worried about strangers at the door.

Shelters for young people were one idea. The big stumbling block is where can they be located? Will a shelter help the fight against anti-social behaviour?

999 should be used for a break-in to a car or house

0845 when something has happened (e.g. youths messing about)

Our new police officer joined us later in the evening with our two PCSOS. They are going to step up patrols in the village.

Our biggest problem at present is a small number of youths causing nuisance.

Serious crime is VERY LOW
